STUDENT PRACTICUM PROGRAM WITH MY WINNIPEG THERAPIST

The Student Practicum Program at My Winnipeg Therapist is designed for graduate students requiring field placement or practicum work, in the field of counselling and psychotherapy, as part of their degree requirements. Typical candidates include students who are pursuing a Master’s degree in Social Work, Master’s of Education degree in Counselling Psychology, or a Master’s of Arts degree in Counselling Psychology

Students who are selected to train with us are provided with a wide variety of learning activities, readings, and resources to support their skill development and theoretical knowledge. The site supervisor will work with students to identify experiential objectives and outline areas of interest throughout the duration of the placement.

Throughout ongoing supervision, students are provided with informal evaluative feedback to support their overall growth and development. Detailed and formal evaluations are typically provided at the middle and end of the placement.

Our program requires a high level of commitment from our practicum students. This is because we offer extensive, frequent, high quality training and support to help build your counselling skills.

We understand that university programs have requirements around how many total hours, direct hours, and indirect hours need to be completed. This number is typically somewhere between 400 and 450 total hours. You can expect that your placement with My Winnipeg Therapist will require between 400-450 total hours.

While university programs vary somewhat, requires You are required to spend 13.5 – 15 hours on average per week. This may be spread out across 2 or 3 days. My Winnipeg Therapist will provide you with a schedule that meets the needs of our clients and provides you with a variety of learning opportunities.

The average breakdown of hours is as follows: 1 hour of weekly supervision, 4 hours per week working directly with clients, 2.5 hours per week for lunch, 2 hours for clinical documentation, 0.5 hours for the weekly reflection, 3-4 hours for study/supervisory assigned activities.

The average breakdown of hours is as follows: depending on your experience, students start with 1 to 2 clients per week and gradually increase 8 to 12 per week; 1 hour of weekly supervision, 2 to 3 hours per week for lunch, 2 hours for clinical documentation, 3-4 hours for study/supervisory assigned activities.

Students are responsible for tracking their own hours using a university approved tracking system or another approved method. Systems for tracking hours need to include a record of specific activities that were completed as well as the amount of time spent.
Your main responsibilities include but are not limited to attending supervision on a weekly basis, attending monthly case consultation meetings, attending quarterly staff meetings, meeting with clients on an ongoing weekly basis, completing clinical documentation and report writing, and engaging in assigned supervisory activities and self-directed study to support your work with clients and professional growth and identity as a therapist.
We will typically follow the evaluation structure provided to us by your university however we may also provide you with additional feedback that you will find beneficial for planning the transition from student to professional.
