From genetics, biochemical factors, and illnesses, to aging, stressful events, and long-term pressures, depression is a complicated and highly serious medical illness that is actually more common than we realize. A poll taken in December of 2020 found that over 22% of surveyed Canadians reported that they had been diagnosed with a form of depression throughout their lifetime. We can assume that these harrowing statistics have increased since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Remember, too, the numbers reported are only those who have been clinically diagnosed. Too often, depression goes untreated and underdiagnosed for various stigmatic reasons.

One prominent factor contributing to depression is one’s over-reliance on alcohol. For starters, alcohol abuse accounts for a high number of fatalities in the United States, with an estimated 95,000 people dying from alcohol abuse-related accidents each year. In Canada, drunk driving is the country’s deadliest crime, accounting for an estimated 1,500 fatalities each year. With that being said, what a lot of people fail to account for are the deadly long-term effects that alcoholism brings, not just in accidents, but in situations where it causes depression and anxiety.

The Alcohol & Depression Link

This brings us to the question: Is there a link between a high consumption of alcohol and episodes of depression? Research tells us the answer. In recent studies, it has been shown that there is a bidirectional relationship between alcohol abuse and depressive disorders. In fact, it has been noted that they end up both contributing to an extremely vicious cycle. Both alcoholism and depression can exist together, and the presence of one increases the risk and worsens the condition of the other. In other words, alcoholism can elevate the chances of depression, and depression can trigger someone’s desire to overuse alcohol.

This back-and-forth cause-and-effect situation is a common problem. The risk for someone who is depressed is to use alcohol to numb the pain of depression. While in the short term, you feel less pain, using alcohol for this purpose regularly increases the severity of the pain of depression. In other words, a short-term gain, but long-term pain. Commonly enough, it can also ignite an episode of depression in people who weren’t supposedly suffering from a mental illness in the first place. Alcoholism can be extremely dangerous, and people who suffer from it are usually caught in an endless spiral from which they can hardly escape without constant support and professional help.

How Depression Clinics Can Help

Alcoholism-induced depression is an extremely serious issue, and no one should go through it alone. That is why depression clinics such as My Winnipeg Therapist are here to help. My Winnipeg Therapist is a therapy and counselling service located in the charming city of Winnipeg, Manitoba.

Exercising self-care when it comes to your mental health is an imperative part of living a happy, fulfilling life. More and more companies are now recognizing how pivotal it is to offer wellness programs and care for the psychological well-being of their employees. And while mental health manifests itself in a number of ways, what about for those over the age of 50?

Here are some of the things you should know about mental health over 50:

One in Five Older Adults Experience Mental Health Concerns

Mental health challenges aren’t a normal part of aging, but they can be inflicted upon people who are over the age of fifty. The most common concern revolves around anxiety and depression. The unfortunate thing is that many older adults who experience these mental health issues do not seek out medical treatment. This could either be because of stigmas surrounding mental health or because they believe this is a normal part of aging.

It’s Just as Important to Work On Mental Health as it is Physical Health

Many older adults are told that they should remain as active as possible. While this is absolutely essential to maintaining one’s health, older adults should also look to keep their mental health balanced as well. If an older adult has an untreated mental health disorder or is simply dealing with a temporary crisis, it can lead to substance abuse, diminished functioning and poor quality of life. In some cases, poor mental health can lead to an increase in the likelihood of an untimely death.

If you’re a healthy older adult then you still have plenty of time to enjoy all of life’s precious moments. On top of taking walks and socializing, reading a book and participating in activities like meditation or yoga are effective ways of stimulating the mind – helping to truly heal your body and soul.

Older Adults Are At Risk for Mental Health Disorders Despite Their History

A person may have not experienced mental health problems – or if they had mental health problems, they were able to manage them. Despite this fact, anyone can develop psychological issues as they age. Strokes, Parkinson’s disease, arthritis, diabetes or cancer can all contribute to the deterioration of someone’s mental health, leading to the abuse of medications, drugs or alcohol.

Suicide Is a Risk

Believe it or not, older adults have the highest risk of suicide in the country. People who are 85 and above present the highest risk, while those aged 75 to 84 are the second highest. Unfortunately, older adults’ suicide attempts are more lethal than in other age brackets.

Older adults often let their sadness from aging and other medical problems fester without consulting professionals. If you are an adult over 50 and feel you are starting to experience mental health problems, you don’t need to keep these problems to yourself.

If you’re in the Winnipeg area and are over the age of 50, consult with My Winnipeg Therapist. Our specialists are here for you and your mental health needs. By caring for your mental health, our therapists will ensure a better quality of life for adults over 50.

The post The Importance of Mental Health Over 50 first appeared on My Winnipeg Therapist.

Depression is the constant feeling of sadness that can start affecting how you act, go about your daily activities, and interact with others. On top of making you feel ambivalent to previous interests and social engagements, depression can lead to suicidal thoughts and can prove dangerous if left untreated.

If you are experiencing any signs or symptoms of depression, do not feel alone. Depression is a very common mental disorder with nearly 300 million people suffering each year. A global cause of disability, depression is treatable with the help of a licensed therapist.

What Are the Signs and Symptoms of Depression?

The unfortunate thing about depression is that it can take a while to diagnose. It differs from usual mood fluctuations and short-lived responses to life’s stressors. Depression is a chronic and ongoing condition in which the feeling of dread or despair never seems to pass.

Here are the symptoms of depression:

A constant feeling of sadness and hopelessness

Getting upset over little things in short, angry bursts

Body aches that are unexplained

Losing interest in activities (sports, time with friends, and even being intimate)

Sleeping too much – feeling as if you can’t get out of bed, and that small tasks are too much to handle

A loss of sleep – experiencing insomnia

Excessive eating

A loss of appetite

Inability to remember things or concentrate on tasks

A feeling of restlessness and anxiety

Slowed body movements

Fixated on previous failures and an overall mindset of self-doubt about one’s worth

Frequent thoughts of suicide

Depression Symptoms in Teens and Children

Depression is not just observed in adults. It is also common in teenagers and may even be seen in children as young as four. Depression can manifest itself in children as sadness, clinginess, aches, irritability, being underweight, and not wanting to go to school.

Teenagers can experience depression as sadness, negative thoughts, irritability, poor performance in school, feelings of being misunderstood, recreational drug use, excessive eating and sleeping, self-harm, and loss of interests.

When Should You Seek Medical Help?

If you are experiencing any of the symptoms of depression, you should seek medical treatment. Depression is a serious and very real condition that can be helped with professional help. If comfortable, it’s also important to reach out to a loved one and let them know what you are experiencing.

Depression takes many forms. Sadly, there are many individuals experiencing depression and are unaware of its long-term consequences if left untreated.

Experiencing depression can be a debilitating process that can go either untreated or improperly treated. Many people who experience depression leverage the help of a medical professional, who subsequently wind up prescribing them an antidepressant. While antidepressants can help those suffering from depression, treating the ailment sometimes requires a more targeted and focused strategy that stems beyond solely medication.

In this article, we’ll explore the highly beneficial practice of cognitive behavioral therapy. Specifically, as a way to combat feelings of depression.

What is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy?

As a form of psychotherapy, cognitive behavioral therapy modifies cyclical thought patterns in order to positively alter someone’s mood or behavior. This type of psychotherapy is based on the idea that negative actions or feelings are the result of current feelings, thoughts, and experiences – not any repressed memories from the past.

Cognitive behavioral therapy is a blend between cognitive therapy and behavioral therapy. It combines a therapeutic approach that focuses on emotional state and thoughts, as well as actions and behaviors. A cognitive behavioral therapist will work with you in order to specifically identify any negative thought patterns or behavioral responses to situations that can be challenging or stressful.

A cognitive behavioral therapist will develop a treatment that finds constructive and balanced ways to respond to major stressors in order to help minimize or eliminate the troubling behavior.

How Does CBT Help Overcome Depression?

It’s important to remember that cognitive behavioral therapy is a short-term approach to overcoming depression as opposed to psychoanalysis or psychodynamic therapies. These areas of therapy will require work over an extended period of time in order to help patients overcome hardships. However, cognitive behavioral therapy could require anywhere in between ten and twenty sessions.

These sessions will give the patient the opportunity to identify any current life situations that may be triggering feelings of depression. As these situations are identified, it’ll help the therapist in finding the patterns of someone’s thinking that are leading to depression.

How is this different from psychoanalysis? Psychoanalysis works by going backward throughout someone’s life to identify moments that could be contributing to depression. Cognitive behavioral therapy, on the other hand, looks to identify current situations that are causing the onset of depression in order to overcome those thoughts and feelings.

In addition, practices that are included in cognitive behavioral therapy that may be used to combat depression are:

Learning how to control the thoughts and reactions that are contributing to depression

Learning how to accurately assess situations and how to react to them

Practicing positive self-talk

Cognitive behavioral therapy is not just for those who are experiencing depression. If you are feeling anxiety, any specific phobias, sleep disorders, substance abuse and more, then you can get involved in cognitive behavioral therapy.

With the shift online during 2020, many industries and services found themselves re-evaluating client needs, best practices, and essential worker safety. The mental health was no different. In fact, the need for accessible and affordable mental health only increased during the past year. Online companies spang up with many using non-licensed, inexperienced, and often transitioning individuals to facilitate therapy.

While not the right solution for everyone, online therapy or telehealth, is now becoming one of the top ways to seek mental health services. If you’re in the Winnipeg area and the idea of counselling in your own space sounds appealing, we’re excited to announce a perfect merge of the two. My Winnipeg Therapist will now be conducting both in person and online sessions moving forward to provide both accessible but also experienced, licensed mental health services to the Winnipeg area. Our counsellors are trained, accessible, and best of all committed to continuing your mental health journey with you.

What are the advantages of online counselling?

Online Counselling Is More Accessible

Online counselling will be a viable option even after the pandemic. Not only is it more accessible for those who live in rural areas, but it’s accessible for those who may be disabled and unable to get in-person counselling. Reaching out to a therapist can be as simple as sending a text or an email.

Web Counselling Is Convenient For Busy People

Let’s say you’re someone who is always on the go or you have a full house to take care of. You don’t have much time at all, let alone time to go and spend an hour or more with a counsellor – especially if one is far away. Online counselling has been effective among couples with differing schedules, those with a busy work day, and those on shift work.

Web Counselling Is An Affordable Option

In many cases, web counselling has been shown to be a more affordable option for people looking for therapy services. Unlike a cold or the flu, mental illnesses – like anxiety or depression – and couple’s therapy can take time. There is no set session time, and while many choose to meet with their therapist on a weekly or bi-weekly basis, this can get costly.

Online counselling may allow (as your therapy or treatment plan progresses) to move away from more expensive weekly in-person sessions to regular, but less frequent check-in intervals. Removing the time spent to and from therapy, and the exchange between sessions can make it more efficient for both therapists and clients.

What Are The Disadvantages?

With anything, there are always disadvantages. Here are a few disadvantages of online counselling:

You lose nonverbal cues. When you’re in person with a counselor, they can tell how you are feeling by reading your body language. This is not something that can be done with web counselling.

You have to have a counselor who is licensed in your province or territory – crossing provincial borders for a web counsellor can be illegal.

You may not know someone’s full list or credentials, nor their validity sometimes with online counselling.

It’s important to establish trust and a strong relationship with your online therapist. Having someone local can help foster that relationship. At My Winnipeg Therapist, we have experienced and knowledgeable therapists who can fit your needs and provide the best in both in-person and online counselling available.

The post Local Winnipeg Counselling – Now Online first appeared on My Winnipeg Therapist.

Everyone feels stressed out from time to time. But how can you tell whether you’re feeling normal stress, or if you’re already experiencing symptoms of an anxiety disorder? The two can seem awfully alike, especially since they produce a similar set of negative emotions in us.

While stress can be easily addressed with common stress management techniques, anxiety disorders are more persistent. Anxiety disorders can have heavier implications on your overall functioning and significantly lower your quality of life. Because of this, it’s important to keep an eye out for signs of an anxiety disorder. Spotting the difference between normal stress and an anxiety disorder can help you address your mental health problems before they get too serious.

What is Stress?

To distinguish stress from anxiety disorders, we first need to understand what stress is.

According to the author and psychologist Spencer A. Rathus, stress is an emotional response to an external stimulus that demands us to adapt, cope, or adjust to a situation. While we normally think of stress as something negative, you might be surprised to find that there is such a thing as good stress.

It’s possible for stress to be a good thing.

Hans Selye was the first one to propose the idea that stress can be good for you. He called good stress the term ‘eustress’, whose Greek root “eu” means ‘good’. In doing so, Selye made a distinction between eustress and bad stress. Though our bodies can’t tell the difference between good stress and bad stress, Selye found that the way we think of stress shapes how we experience it. He posited that stress can actually push us to challenge ourselves to expand our skills and even build our confidence in our ability to cope with the demands of daily life.

However, stress can also be bad.

As opposed to eustress, bad stress has the opposite effect on the psyche. Selye used the term ‘distress’ to denote bad stress. Unlike eustress, distress arose from persistent patterns of hardship and defeat. We experience distress when situations consistently exceed our ability to cope with them. Because of this, we may end up thinking that we aren’t fit to deal with the world when we have difficulty managing stress.

Though we may normally be able to deal with problems as they arise, persistent negative experiences of stress can cause us to develop symptoms of depression and anxiety.

What is an Anxiety Disorder?

Not all stress leads to an anxiety disorder, but the potential for one to develop out of chronic stress is always a possibility. Like many psychological conditions, anxiety disorders feature physiological symptoms.

Try to recall the last time you felt nervous about something. Was it a job interview? Delivering a speech at a wedding? You may remember feeling like there was a lump in your throat, sweat rolling down your forehead, and clammy hands. These are common ways anxiety reflects on the body. Anxiety on its own, however, isn’t an anxiety disorder. For it to qualify as a disorder, it has to meet certain criteria. Under the DSM V, there are many anxiety disorders, each with its own separate diagnostic criteria.

Symptoms common to anxiety disorders are:

Excessive worrying about a variety of events, situations, or things.

Irritable mood.

Difficulty sleeping and/or feeling restless.

A constant sense of impending danger.

Difficulty concentrating or thinking about something that isn’t the source of worry.

Stress vs. Anxiety Disorder

Now that you know what stress and anxiety disorders are, you already have an idea of the substantial ways they differ from each other. But a quick and crucial way to tell these two apart is to figure out whether you’re responding to immediate and tangible stimuli.

Stress is a direct response to a present threat, and the feelings associated with it normally go away once a problem is resolved. For those experiencing anxiety disorders, however, the feeling of tension never quite goes away, and they always feel on edge, even when there is no present source of stress. If you’re suffering from an anxiety disorder, you may even find that your constant worrying about the mere possibility of running into a stressful situation is, in itself, causing you stress.

Beginning to understand your feelings of stress and anxiety is a step in the right direction, but it’s best to consult an anxiety therapist to confirm whether you do have an anxiety disorder. If you suspect that what you’re feeling is no longer within the range of normal stress, reach out to a mental health professional who can help you process and deal with anxiety.

Concerned you have an Anxiety Disorder?

If you’re reading this and realizing that you may fall into that “anxiety disorder” category, it may be time to get some professional help. The good news is that counselling can be a very effective way to treat anxiety disorders! And if you live in the Winnipeg area, the therapists at My Winnipeg Therapist would love to help.

It’s Sunday evening, and you have a deadline you need to meet by Monday morning. You’re on your fifth cup of coffee, the work is only halfway done, and now your computer just crashed. You grit your teeth and fight the urge to scream because you’ll wake up everyone in the house.

You still need to finish, but now your nerves are frayed, and you can’t focus.

Stress is an emotion everyone experiences. Whether you’re a student or a working adult, there’s no doubt you’re familiar with the feeling of tension that stress brings. Stress can come from just about anywhere. It can come from less serious matters like your hockey team losing, or from more serious issues like losing a loved one. No matter what causes you to feel stress, it doesn’t change the fact that you’re feeling that emotion, and it is perfectly valid to feel that way.

Once you’ve acknowledged that you’re feeling stressed out, the next challenge is figuring out how to calm yourself down by managing stress. Without the right stress management techniques, it is possible to develop an anxiety disorder. Rising cortisol levels cause stress in the brain, but it isn’t a mystical force that’s out of your control. Like how simple things can stress you out, there are simple ways to rid yourself of stress.

Here are four easy ways to help you better manage your stress:

1: Meditate

You’ve probably heard this before, and I know what you’re thinking: The same old advice? Don’t they have anything new to suggest? But there’s a reason why meditation has been used as a stress management technique for millennia: Meditation really works!

You think meditation is too time-consuming for your schedule. But several meditation apps on the market provide you with a quick fix. Most meditation apps have 5-minute to 15-minute sessions that you can easily follow during your lunch break or between classes. All you need to do is find a nice, quiet spot and relax in a comfortable position.

2: Take a break

It’s tempting to force yourself to keep working. It’s what’s causing you to feel stressed, so finishing it ASAP might be just what you need to relax…right? Sometimes, a go-getter attitude isn’t what you need but rather some time away.

You don’t need to book a flight to Cancun to relax. Separate yourself from the situation for an hour or two and do something else. Take a step outside and get some fresh air or have a nap. When you come back to finish your task, your mind will be refreshed. That makes it easier to approach the problem in a different, more effective way.

3: Be kind to yourself

It’s all too easy to think badly of ourselves when we struggle with a problem. But this just makes you stress out more! And does nothing to ease the anxiety you’re feeling. As cheesy as it sounds, it’s important to be kind to yourself in high-stress situations.

Next time you feel stressed out, pause and assess the way you talk to yourself. Do you call yourself stupid for messing up? Do you beat yourself up over situations outside of your control? The way we talk about ourselves can shape how we feel, not just about the situation but also about ourselves. Replace negative self-talk with gentle, more realistic talk like ‘I may be having a hard time, but a lot of people would find this tough. This helps you build confidence in your ability to deal with stressful situations.

4: Journal

While the previous tips focused on the emotional management side of managing stress, journaling has a more direct, solution-oriented technique. Bullet journaling is a proactive approach to stress that helps you mitigate stressful situations or, if possible, avoid them altogether.

Using the bullet journal system, you can easily categorize your priorities and plot out your plan of attack over the coming week. When you can see all of your goals, to-dos, and deadlines listed, you may be surprised to see how much time you actually have! Not to mention, bullet journaling itself is a relaxing process where you can just tune out for a couple of hours and enjoy writing.

Managing stress is a crucial aspect of daily life, but sometimes it gets too much for us to handle on our own. When things get too overwhelming, it’s best to get in touch with an anxiety therapist in Winnipeg who can help you alleviate your stress.

Did you know that on most days, the average person has between 25,000 and 50,000 thoughts? That’s an impressive amount of thoughts.

But what happens when the majority of these thoughts are negative? Imagine the impact on your psyche and your life if you had thousands and thousands of negative thoughts each day?

This amount of negative thinking is a hallmark of depression. Pessimistic thinking is depression speaking for you. It is the voice of depression. What many people don’t realize is that depression is manifested in negative thinking before it ever creates a negative thought itself.

This is why it is imperative for those suffering from depression to become acutely aware of their thought patterns. If not checked, negative thinking becomes a habit, one that has the potential to completely shape your life.

Change How You Think

One of the most powerful ways people can lift themselves out of the darkness of depression is to change their thinking patterns. This is why cognitive therapy is such a profound change agent. The approach is based on the fact that thought-processing errors contribute to a depressed mood.

By changing how you think, you automatically change how you feel. Once you become aware that changing your thinking is important, you are presented with an active choice you can take to benefit your mental health.

You will no doubt find that changing your thought patterns can feel about as easy as changing a tire in the rain with nothing more than a hard-boiled egg and a paper clip. But it can be done.

Here are some tips on how you can begin to change your negative thoughts:

Keep Track of Your Thoughts

Many people are in denial about their thought patterns. They don’t want to believe they are overly pessimistic. Catching yourself and recording as many negative thoughts as you can will help you to see your own mental patterns.

What will these thoughts look like? You could write things like, “I hate my feet.” “My boss is an idiot.” “I hate spring.” “I hate getting up this early.” “I don’t know what I’m doing.”

Be particularly mindful of making sweeping generalizations from one specific event so that your entire future looks doomed. For example, a generalized thought such as, “My girlfriend broke up with me, so I’m doomed to spend the rest of my life alone.” This kind of extreme, black-and-white thinking is a sure sign of depression.

Identify Triggers

Once you get an idea of the frequency of your negative thoughts, try to pinpoint the triggers for them. Your journal will also come in handy here, because it will point out certain types of events that set off a chain of negative thoughts. Triggers can include being rejected or ignored, or having an unkind remark said about or to you.

Positive Conversion

You have so far learned that the human thinking process is habitual. But the good news is, you can create good thinking habits.

To do this, you’ve got to start converting all of those negative thoughts into positive ones. It will be hard at first, and you will most likely feel as if you’re lying to yourself and pretending to be a glass-half-full Pollyanna.

But, as they say, “You’ve got to fake it until you make it.” Though thinking positively may feel foreign to you and like a waste of your time, you are retraining your brain to think (and feel) good.

Every time you have a negative thought, stop, recognize it as negative, and immediately flip the switch and create the positive opposite thought in its place. This could look like:

Negative thought: “I’ll never get this report done on time.”

Positive Switch: “I’m making great progress and being careful to always check my work.”

To get the hang of how to do this, go through your negativity journal and create a separate column in which you will write the positive opposites of your many negative thoughts.

It’s natural to feel down or anxious from time to time. What’s not natural, however, is prolonged feelings of hopelessness and despair. When these emotions grab hold and won’t let go, it is likely you may have depression. Depression makes every day a constant challenge. You no longer enjoy life as you once did. Just getting out of bed can feel overwhelming.

But, through education and therapy, you can overcome depression and get back to the life you were meant to live.

If you’re unsure of whether you are suffering from depression, read on to learn 4 common signs of the disease.

Signs of Depression

How can you tell if you are depressed? It may seem like an odd question, but a surprising number of people do not recognize that they may be suffering from depression. While some signs are obvious, others can be subtle.

Every individual will manifest symptoms differently, so it’s important to recognize any changes in your behaviour. With this in mind, here are four signs you might be struggling with depression.

Changes in Weight

Depression can affect individuals in different ways. Some people may find they have no appetite at all and, before long, lose a significant amount of weight. Others may find their desire for food increases, and they easily gain weight.

Changes in Sleep Cycles

As with a person’s appetite, the changes to one’s sleep cycle can also go in one of two directions. You may notice you feel lethargic and want nothing more than to sleep all day. Then again, you may find you can’t fall asleep and are restless all night long.

Anger and Irritability

It has been said that anger is depression turned inward. If you suddenly find yourself with a short fuse, and things that used not to bother you now cause you to fly off the handle, it may be a sign you need some help.

Physical Ailments

Many people don’t realize that depression can manifest itself physically. It is common for sufferers to feel sick to their stomach with whole-body aches. Some may find they seem to have a cold or flu that won’t go away, while others may notice their chronic conditions, such as arthritis, are exacerbated by depression.

It is important to recognize these signs so you may seek treatment as soon as possible. While depression may feel like a life sentence, reaching out for help will put you on the path toward joy and peace once again.

If you or a loved one is interested in exploring treatment, please contact me today. I would be happy to speak with you about how I may be able to help.

The post 4 Signs You Might Be Struggling with Depression first appeared on My Winnipeg Therapist.
