You’re anxious often. You’re easily startled at times. Thoughts, memories, and images keep coming up into your mind.  It sucks your energy.

You know that unresolved trauma can affect every part of your life. It affects how you feel and think, your work and relationships, and your feelings about your place in the world.

For many people, the safest thing to do it deal with it by themselves.  We get that. Based on what you’ve been through, that makes sense. Unfortunately, trying to recover from trauma alone rarely works.

Healing from trauma is challenging work; the rewards are increased resilience, greater flexibility towards life’s challenges, and a deeper appreciation of things in life.

The good news is that trauma and PTSD are treatable. But it takes time and commitment. Our therapists understand that and are here to help you through the process.

Common Symptoms of PTSD

  • repeated thoughts about the trauma

  • disturbing dreams or nightmares

  • intense guilt or shame

  • feeling in danger or always on guard

  • taking drugs or alcohol to cope with the distress

  • constantly tired, fatigued

  • difficulty with attention and focus

  • forgetful

  • difficulty with memory, or remembering

  • difficulty making decisions

  • difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep

  • avoiding others, isolating

It May Be Time to Seek PTSD Treatment

There are differences between trauma and PTSD. PTSD is a psychological reaction where the traumatic event is experienced over and over again through flashbacks, intrusive thoughts and nightmares. PTSD occurs after a traumatic event, but not all traumatic events cause Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

Even without PTSD symptoms, past traumatic events can still be harrowing and psychologically and emotionally damaging. Any form of trauma that interferes with your daily activities, your relationships, or how you feel about yourself is severe and deserves attention.

If you have any of these trauma symptoms for an extended period and they’re interfering with you living your life, then you may need to seek help from a qualified therapist. Dealing with trauma doesn’t have to be a life sentence.  Our therapists can help you learn skills and techniques to work through this.

Post Traumatic Stress Therapy Can Help

Counsellors at My Winnipeg Therapist who treat trauma have helped so many clients treat their trauma. Clients have learned practical skills, gained a more positive outlook and increased their resilience.  Clients describe many significant changes in their recovery process, but a couple that seem to stand out are, ‘I feel more whole’ and ‘I feel connected to others.’

We understand how complex and confusing trauma can be and how it gets in the way of so many things in your life.  It’s painful, for sure.  But it’s treatable, so we want to help you.

My Winnipeg Therapist Approach to PTSD and Therapy

Trauma work requires a range of therapeutic approaches, and our therapists are trained in various treatments that address trauma.  As a trauma-informed clinic, our therapists understand the importance of creating a safe, trusting space for clients.  And the treatment is done at the pace that works for you.  And any approach, treatment of technique is always done with the approval and permission of the client.

One of our primary treatments is Trauma-focused CBT, which focuses on the thoughts and thinking patterns that are connected with the trauma. Techniques are used to reduce the power of negative thoughts and negative beliefs about oneself and the world.

Trauma-focused CBT addresses issues of fear and safety and helps clients identify resources, supports and safety.  CBT addresses anger related to complex trauma from various forms of abuse.  This includes psycho-education around trauma and PTSD related to your trauma and how trauma affects the brain and body, thoughts, feelings, and relationships.  CBT uses techniques to manage and reduce the impact of flashbacks and nightmares through strategies that promote trauma processing.  Treatment allows the client to work through trauma memories, images and thoughts in a manner that is safe to the client and allows a gradual release of trauma experience.

Because trauma is an emotional experience, Emotion Focused Therapy helps you identify, understand and regulate your feelings.  Various techniques allow you to process strong emotions and shift your feelings towards more preferable feelings.

DBT for trauma is effective in managing distressful emotions, techniques to create calm in moments of distress and promote emotion regulation, mindfulness to increase calm and effective communication that helps you speak up for yourself.
